Education Resources
For families with children, one of the primary concerns in moving to a new home is what schools your children will attend. The Eastern Shore has some excellent schools scattered throughout the area. To see a full listing of both public and private schools, you can check the website Great Schools. School Matters is another site providing information on local schools as well.
From pre-school through high school and onto community college and major universities, this region has some of the finest educational institutions to be found anywhere. There are a multitude of adult education courses through the local counties and also through local parks and recreation departments.
There are numerous public schools on the Eastern Shore, in Maryland they include Wicomico County, Worcester County, Somerset County and Dorchester County. These school systems provide many neighborhood elementary schools, as well as the larger middle and high schools.
For those who choose to home-school their children in MD or DE it's important to follow each jurisdiction's guidelines. There is an active national organization as well as numerous local networks of like-minded parents both MD and DE.
Major universities in the area include Salisbury University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and a bit farther out are Johns Hopkins, Towson State and the University of Maryland. Transportation
The pace of life is a bit slower here on the Shore and most people who live here all year around also work here. Except for peak periods in the summer when tourist traffic jams the major highways, most major routes in the area handle the flow of traffic efficiently.
Route 50 takes travelers west across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and Route 301 heads north, with the Coastal Highway running north to south from Delaware to Virginia.
There is public transportation coordinated by Shore Transit for the counties of Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset. Bus routes cover much of this tri-county area and 7-day unlimited ride passes can be purchased for fixed routes.
There is a small regional airport in the area, Wicomico Regional Airport (KSBY) serving Salisbury and Ocean City. It is supported by three larger metropolitan airports: Reagan National Aiport in Washington, DC (DCA); Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI); and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).
For those who choose to travel by water and don't have a dock outside their back door, there are numerous marinas in the area that can handle a wide variety of vessels. Area Services
Establishing yourself in a new area means considering issues such as healthcare. Shore Health System provides outstanding medical services to our community, and there are well established hospitals in the area: Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Atlantic General Hospital and Dorchester General among others. There are also teaching and research facilities in DC and Baltimore, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) operates clinics and facilities in the Betheda area as well. If you or any member of your family needs specialized care you will find those resources close by.
There are many choices for childcare in the area, through daycare centers and also private daycare. There are also local groups for Moms Working from Home and also Moms Staying at Home. The communities here offer a great deal of support to singles, families, young professionals and those who are retired. You will never lack for company should you choose to seek it here on the Eastern Shore.

Area Government
Moving to a new area necessitates figuring out where to go for everything from changing your address to changing your driver's license in MD or DE. Here on the Eastern Shore, some services are handled by local governments such as the City of Salisbury, others by county governments, and then there are functions handled by the State of Maryland or the State of Delaware.
Depending on where you ultimately choose to purchase your home, you may need information specifically for Wicomico County, Worcester County, Somerset or Dorchester here in Maryland, or Sussex County or Kent County in Delaware.
The region as a whole provides many excellent community services such as libraries, festivals, sporting events and cultural programs, and you can find almost any information you need through the appropriate website.
