I think we really need to recognize and realize the huge success that was New Year’s Eve on the downtown plaza. A new trend and tradition has been set, and not since I have been a residence of the city of Salisbury have I been so excited with the positive strides our community is taking to bring life back to the downtown area.
First off the organizers of this event, Joey Gilkerson and Jaime Heater, need to be recognized for pulling off such a stellar event along with the city council, the mayor and the chamber of commerce, as well. Let’s not forget all the volunteers, police department, EMS, firefighters, sponsors, and the local businesses that participated to make this possible.
Many businesses, volunteers and sponsors contributed time and money to make this a free event for all ages. The event featured two bands, a DJ, a ball drop at midnight, and many of the downtown restaurants were open and participated in the success of this event. I’m not sure of the exact count of how many people were on the plaza but it is one of the most packed events I have ever witnessed for the plaza.
Most of the business owners I spoke to after the event said it was a record night. Indeed, change in a positive direction continues for our city. I think it is truly amazing what can be achieved when a community bands together for positive change, and I am really looking forward to future events and the continued momentum downtown.
